Key points
- Reseller: fastest and simplest, with limited brand and product control.
- White label: your brand and customer, provider technology underneath.
- MVNO: deeper operational control with higher complexity and investment.
- Wholesale or API: focused integration for teams that already own the customer journey.
The reseller model
A reseller promotes products that remain recognizably connected to another provider. It can be a good way to test demand because catalogue, fulfilment and customer processes already exist. Affiliate arrangements are an even lighter version: the partner generates sales and receives a commission while the retail provider owns the transaction and service.
The trade-off is limited control. Pricing, customer data, packaging, support and product roadmap may remain with the original provider. Reselling is useful when connectivity is an ancillary channel, not when the goal is to build a distinct connectivity asset.
The white-label model
White label separates the customer-facing business from the telecom infrastructure. The partner controls the identity, domain, offer, pricing and customer relationship. The platform provider supplies connectivity, provisioning, plan management and the operational layer behind the service.
This model supports a branded storefront, mobile experience, web portal, physical SIM and API without requiring the partner to assemble each component independently. It is therefore suited to travel, fintech, retail, mobility and digital brands that want connectivity to feel native to their existing customer experience.
The wholesale and API model
Wholesale is appropriate when a business already has the storefront, app, billing and support environment. It needs access to products, provisioning and lifecycle functions rather than a complete branded front end. API integration can automate ordering, activation, usage retrieval and plan management inside that existing stack.
This route provides flexibility, but it also transfers more product and integration responsibility to the partner. The decision should reflect the team's engineering capacity and desired time to market.
The MVNO route
An MVNO model can provide deeper control over telecommunications functions, commercial agreements and service design. It may be justified at significant scale or when the business model requires capabilities that a platform cannot provide.
It also introduces more integration, compliance, supplier management, network operations and capital requirements. The label MVNO covers different technical models, so the actual responsibility can vary widely. A detailed feasibility and regulatory assessment is essential.
How to choose
Choose reseller or affiliate when speed and simplicity matter more than brand ownership. Choose white label when the customer relationship is strategic but telecom infrastructure is not. Choose wholesale or API when you already have the customer layer. Explore an MVNO model when deep network control is central to the economics and your organization is prepared to operate it.
Questions, answered
Is white label the same as wholesale?
No. Wholesale typically supplies connectivity products or interfaces. White label adds a ready branded customer and operating layer around them.
Which model launches fastest?
An affiliate or reseller model is usually fastest, followed by a focused white-label storefront. Deep API and MVNO models generally take longer.
Can a white-label business later add API integration?
Yes. A common path is to launch with the platform and storefront, then embed selected journeys through the API.
